What is a common symptom of thrush?

A common symptom of thrush, or oral candidiasis, is the presence of white patches on the tongue and other mucosal surfaces in the mouth. These patches consist of fungal growth (Candida) and can appear creamy white or yellowish. They are often described as being similar to cottage cheese and may be easily scraped off, revealing a red, inflamed surface underneath.

The formation of these white patches is primarily due to the overgrowth of Candida organisms, which tends to happen in certain conditions, such as immunocompromised states, antibiotic use, or in individuals with diabetes. The patches can lead to discomfort and potentially pain when eating or swallowing, but the defining characteristic of thrush is indeed these distinct white lesions.
